When it comes to lighting your sign you have several options to choose from:
1. Traditional fluorescent tubes which are mercury filled and require a ballast for operation.
2. Neon Lighting which is filled with gases and is very expensive and a delicate type of lighting which requires high voltage to operate. Just 15' of neon requires around 15,000 volts to operate.
3. LED Lighting, the newest greatest technology on the market today. This lighting is better, brighter, safer, and is great for the environment. LED Lighting only runs on 12v DC, the same as landscape lighting. All though it has not been perfected for large scale signs the engineers are currently working on a way to be able to use LED's for all aspects of lighting. Even residential homes are starting to be built with LED lighting.
So why not upgrade your current sign or channel letters to get the better lighting effect, save on your electric bill and help the environment at the same time. Unlike incandescent or fluorescent lights, LED technology also contains no filaments or starters. LED lights do require a ballast to run the lights but it is not the same as a traditional ballast. A LED ballast takes the 120v AC input and converts it to a 12v DC output. LED lighting runs on 12v low voltage current so no electrician is necessary for install. LED's have the same voltage as your traditional landscape lighting. Compared to conventional lighting systems, LED lighting requires far less maintenance and can last up to 50,000 hours while still putting out up to 70% of its original light. LED lights don't burn out, but fade out gradually, requiring less time and effort than typical light bulbs.
Because LED bulbs are so energy efficient, they can potentially cut your energy bill by 50% or more. Replacing a typical three tube fluorescent light (with each light putting out 32 watts) with LED bulbs (with each light putting out 15 watts) cuts energy costs by over half while still producing the same amount of light. But perhaps the most important benefit of switching to LED lighting is its impact on the environment.
